School bus damaged

BURK’S FALLS – A school bus sustained damage after being doused with the contents of a fire extinguisher.

According to police, a smaller-style school bus belonging to Whitmell Bus Lines Ltd. sustained damage sometime during the early morning hours of Oct. 8.

The bus was entered and the contents of the extinguisher were partially emptied.

The stop arm located on the outside of the driver’s side of the bus was bent.

The remainder of the contents of the extinguisher was emptied on Yonge Street where it was later found.

Cottage BE

 

BURK’S FALLS – Items were stolen from cottages on Three Mile Lake in Armour Township.

On Sept. 30, police from the Almaguin Highlands OPP detachment investigated the break, enter and theft to two cottages.

According to police numerous items were stolen from both cottages, including tools, fishing equipment, snowboards and paintball equipment.

The thefts occurred between Sept. 16 and Sept. 30.

 

 

ATV flees police

 

EMSDALE – A 19-year-old London man faces charges after police received a complaint of ATVers performing stunts in a parking lot.

Police were conducting RIDE on Oct. 9 at 4 p.m. at Highways 518 and 592 when a driver alerted them to stunts being performed by two ATVs in an Emsdale Road parking lot.

At 4:40 p.m. police located the ATVs and attempted to stop both vehicles. One stopped but the other sped away.

Police attended the suspect’s cottage and arrested the 19 year old.

He was charged with three counts of disobeying a stop sign and two counts of racing a motor vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act. He was also charged with mischief, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police contrary to the Criminal Code. He was also charged with operating a motor vehicle without insurance contrary to the Automobile Insurance Act.

 

Operation Impact

 

ALMAGUIN – This Thanksgiving long weekend, between Oct. 7 and Oct. 10, police were out patrolling highways to ensure motorists reached their destinations safely.

Almaguin Highlands OPP responded to 77 occurrences during that time period and issued 51 Provincial Act charges. These included 27 speeding, two Liquor Licence Act charges, one compulsory Automobile Insurance Act charge, three off-road vehicle charges, two charges of drivers failing to properly wear seatbelts, one careless driving charge, and three charges of disobeying stop signs. They also laid one charge for driving a commercial vehicle without a licence and two charges for racing a motor vehicle contrary to the Highway Traffic Act, one dangerous operation and two flight from police contrary to the Criminal Code.

Police also laid nine other Highway Traffic Act offence notices.

Officers conducted RIDE programs throughout the region checking a total of 400 vehicles.

No charges were laid for impaired driving nor did they issue any driving suspensions.
